Shipping schedule

We ship each USDA hardiness zone during its own planting window: spring for every zone, plus fall for Zones 6–10. Your plants arrive dormant and ready to go straight into the ground. Enter your ZIP to see your exact dates.

Find your ship dates

Your ZIP sets your zone and your shipping window for the whole site.

When do you ship?

Between seasons. Fall shipping for Zones 6–10 starts Nov 15. Spring shipping starts Mar 15.

  • Spring: Mar 15 – Jul 30, every zone, timed per zone
  • Fall: Nov 15 – Mar 15, by zone, Zones 6–10 only

When does each zone ship?

Your zone is highlighted once we know your ZIP. Order-by dates are suggestions: orders placed later still ship while your zone is in season.

Why we ship this way

Why do you ship by zone instead of right away?

Because a bare-root plant does best when it goes into the ground dormant, at planting time where you live.

Dormant plants move best

A dormant plant has no leaves to feed, so it can put its energy into new roots after planting.

Timed to your planting window

Plants arrive when it's planting time in your zone, not in a hard freeze or summer heat, so they settle in with less stress.

Bare root ships light

No pot and no soil means a lighter box and lower shipping cost. Orders over $75 ship free.

Order early to hold stock

Plants are limited. Your order holds yours until your window opens, then it ships.

Order-by dates aren't cutoffs

They're a nudge to get the best selection. We still ship orders placed after them while your zone is in season.

Why no fall shipping in Zones 1–5?

In cold zones the ground can freeze soon after fall planting, so spring is the safer window.

What happens after you order?

  1. 1Order confirmed

You get an order confirmation email. Your plants are held for you.

  2. 2We wait for your window

Nothing ships early. Your zone's dates show on every page once you enter your ZIP.

  3. 3It ships dormant

Bare root, no leaves, no soil. It may look like a stick with roots. That's normal.

  4. 4Plant within days

Soak the roots and plant. Ground frozen? See the planting guide.

Shipping questions

When will my order ship?

During your zone's next shipping window. Enter your ZIP above to see the exact dates. Ordering early gets the best selection, and orders placed after the suggested date still ship while your zone is in season.

Is the order-by date a deadline?

No. It's a suggestion so you get the best selection. We still ship orders placed after it while your zone is in season.

Do you ship in fall?

Fall shipping runs Nov 15 – Mar 15, by zone for Zones 6–10 only. Zones 1–5 get spring shipping only, because the ground can freeze soon after fall planting.

Why do you ship dormant plants?

A dormant bare-root plant has no leaves to support, so it handles the trip and settles into new soil more easily. Why bare root works.

What arrives?

Dormant, bare-root plants with no leaves and no soil. They can look like sticks with roots. That's normal, and they leaf out after planting.

What if my ground is frozen when my plants arrive?

Plant them together temporarily in a well-drained container and set it outside where it gets sun, rain and snow, then move them to their spots when the ground thaws. Details are in the planting guide.

Can I order outside my shipping window?

Yes. Your order holds your plants, and they ship in your zone's next window. Shop bare-root plants.

Where are you planting?

We use your ZIP to show your USDA zone, exact ship dates, and whether a plant can ship to your state. We guess it from your connection; change it anytime.
