Bare root, explained

What is a bare-root plant?

A young tree or shrub dug while dormant and shipped with its roots bare, with no pot or soil. It goes straight into the ground during its planting window.

When will my order ship?

Orders ship twice a year by zone. Spring shipping runs March 15 to July 30, and fall shipping (mid-November to mid-March, by zone) is for Zones 6–10 only. Your exact dates show once we know your ZIP, and on our shipping schedule.

Why is bare root cheaper than potted?

There is no pot, soil or extra season in a garden center to pay for, and it ships light.

What if my plant doesn't make it?

Our 1-year warranty gives store credit for qualifying plants that don't survive their first year.

Why bare root beats potted

  1. Roots go straight into your soil. No circling, pot-shaped roots to fight.
  2. Shipped dormant, at planting time. It arrives inside your zone's planting window.
  3. A fraction of the price. No pot, no soil, no garden-center markup.
What to expect: it arrives without leaves and can look like a bare stick with roots. That's normal; it leafs out after planting.
