Persimmon – American-Favorite for Fruit and Timber

Why Persimmon (Diospyros Virginiana)?

American persimmon, eastern persimmon, common persimmon, simmon, possumwood, sugar plum, and possum apples are all colloquial names for the species of persimmon known scientifically as Diospyros Virginiana. It extends westward through Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Iowa, and Kansas from the southern tip of Connecticut all the way down to Florida. The tree grows naturally in the wild, and Native Americans have cultivated it for centuries to harvest its fruit and timber.

The tree is often dioecious, meaning you must have both female and male plants to get fruit. However, most cultivars are parthenocarpic (producing seedless fruit that is not pollinated).

The persimmon name may be used for both the tree and the fruit, with the latter being used in sweets and savory dishes across the South and Midwest of the United States.

When ripened, the fruit has a high vitamin C content and a flavor best described as highly astringent. Various animals consume it, including birds, opossums, raccoons, squirrels, and white-tailed deer.

American Persimmon flowers are dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female trees. The female trees produce the fruit, while the male trees produce pollen for pollination. The flowers are insect-pollinated, attracting bees and other pollinators. The sweet and flavorful fruits are highly prized for their culinary use, including fresh eating, baking, and drying. American Persimmon is a valuable tree for wildlife, providing food for birds, mammals, and insects. The tree's hard and durable wood has also been used for various purposes, including furniture, tool handles, and musical instruments. American Persimmon is an excellent choice for agroforestry, windbreaks, and wildlife habitats. Its ecological significance and cultural history make it a cherished species in North America.

Fertilization

Fertilization

It is generally recommended to wait to fertilize a bare root plant until it has been established in the ground and is actively growing. This can vary depending on the type of plant and the growing conditions, but it is generally best to wait at least a few weeks to a few months after planting.

During the first year, you should focus on providing the plant with the right amount of water, sunlight and soil to help it become established. Once the plant has become established and is actively growing, you can begin to fertilize it.

You can use a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer or one that is specifically formulated for the type of plant you have. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package and apply it at the recommended rate.

It is also important to note that over-fertilizing can be harmful to plants, so it's always best to error on the side of caution and start with a lower amount of fertilizer and increase as needed.
