Redbud – Heart-Shaped Leaves in Varying Colors

Why Redbud (Cercis Canadensis)?

Redbud, or Cercis Canadensis, is a big deciduous shrub or small tree that is endemic to the eastern region of North America. The twigs are practically black in color and zigzag in shape, marked with lighter lenticels here and there. The winter buds are tiny, spherical, and range in hue from a deep crimson to a chestnut brown. Redbud is a common natural understory tree found in mixed woods and hedgerows; however, it is also often used as an ornamental plant in landscape design.

Enison and opossum may be seasoned with the green twigs of redbud; therefore, it is often referred to as the Spicewood tree in these southern Appalachian mountainous regions.

The blooms are beautiful, and their hues vary from light to deep magenta pink. They are lengthy and appear in groups on the bare stems and sometimes on the trunk from spring through early summer.

The caterpillars of some Lepidoptera, such as Henry's elfin, the redbud leaf folder, and the red-humped caterpillar, feed on the redbud leaves without harming the healthy tree.
