Enter your ZIP. We'll remember it, filter plants to your zone and show your ship dates everywhere on the site.

What does my zone mean?

  • Winter cold is the limit

A plant outside its zone range can die in a hard winter.

  • It sets your ship dates

We ship each zone at its own planting time. See the schedule.

How do I pick plants for my zone?

  1. Find your zone

Enter your ZIP once. Every collection can then filter to plants that fit.

  2. Check the plant's range

Your zone should fall inside the range on the plant page, for example Zones 3–7.

  3. On the edge? Go colder

If your zone is at the cold end of a plant's range, a sheltered spot helps. A plant rated a zone colder gives more room for error.

  4. Then think sun and space

Zone covers cold only. Check sun, soil and mature size too. Small trees and shrubs fit tight yards.

Zone questions

What is a USDA hardiness zone?

The USDA divides the country into zones by average coldest winter temperature, in 10°F steps, with "a" and "b" halves of 5°F. A plant rated for Zones 4–8 handles winters from Zone 4 through Zone 8.

What are the temperatures for each zone?

Zone 2 is −50 to −40°F, Zone 3 is −40 to −30°F, Zone 4 is −30 to −20°F, Zone 5 is −20 to −10°F, Zone 6 is −10 to 0°F, Zone 7 is 0 to 10°F, Zone 8 is 10 to 20°F and Zone 9 is 20 to 30°F, based on average yearly lowest winter temperature.

Can I grow a plant outside its zones?

Plants outside their zone range often die in a hard winter or struggle in heat. Our warranty doesn't cover plants planted outside their recommended zone.

How do you know my zone?

We match your ZIP code to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Your zone also sets your shipping window. See the shipping schedule.

What do 5a and 5b mean?

Each zone is split into two 5°F halves. "a" is the colder half and "b" is the warmer half. Our zone collections group both halves together.
