Plant in Pairs: Trees That Need a Partner: common questions

Why do some trees need a partner?

Many fruit and nut plants cannot pollinate themselves, or set far more fruit when pollen comes from a second, genetically different plant. Wind or insects carry pollen between the two.

Does the partner have to be the same plant?

Usually a second seedling of the same species works. Each product page says exactly what counts as a partner.

Which plants are in stock here right now?

11 plants, from $10.95: American Plum, American Hazelnut, American Elderberry, American Persimmon, Chinese Chestnut, American Pecan and more. Every one ships dormant and bare root.

Which of these grow in the coldest climates?

American Plum (Zone 3), American Elderberry (Zone 3), Black Cherry (Zone 3), Butternut (Zone 3), Nannyberry (Zone 2), Northern Bayberry (Zone 3) handle the coldest winters here. Check your zone before you order; we filter every plant by it.

Which grow fastest?

American Plum, American Elderberry, Black Cherry are rated fast growing, often adding 2 ft or more a year once established.

What size are the plants when they arrive?

They ship as dormant bare-root plants about 2–3 ft, 18–24 in, 1–2 ft tall, depending on the plant. Each product page shows its exact size. Bare-root plants arrive without leaves or soil and leaf out a few weeks after planting.

When will my order ship?

Spring shipping runs March 15 to July 30, timed to your zone. Fall shipping, November 15 to March 15 (by zone), is for Zones 6 to 10. Set your ZIP and every page shows your exact window and order-by date.
